It remains a classic and one of the best Disney animated films ever made. The lion king is pure nostalgia and contains magic. The opening scene alone is legendary: the song in Zulu ("Here comes a lion"), the rising sun, various species of animals rushing to the ceremony, simply amazing! And after this fabulous intro this continues in 'The circle of life' where Simba is introduced to the animal kingdom and each animal faithfully bows its head and recognizes the future king.
You are suddenly in the film and are immediately sold. The film also contains such beautiful visual gems. For example, I still find the Nazi march of the hyenas impressive and the final fight between Scar and Simba between the glittering and splashing fire is still very nicely done.
The lion king will not leave you indifferent: there is friendship, joy, envy, revenge, love and many other emotions. That makes the film successful. The part with Timon and Pumbaa is perhaps slightly less and makes the film collapse a bit, but – I watched the Flemish version with the children – the humor and dialects keep it up. Scar – hopefully he doesn't bring Prince Laurent to mind – is the black sheep of the family and is very jealous of Mufasa and Simba. As in the lion world (and animal kingdom tout court), there is only one alpha male and one worthy king.
Even after 24 years, The lion king effortlessly stands up to both young and old. Lions are always popular with children. Lots of songs in The Lion King, but that's typical of those old Disney's that were semi-musicals, some more fascinating than others. But also visually The lion king is still rock solid. The theme (Hakuna Matata) remains catchy and current. In short, a successful Disney print, still!

A film that is wonderful for children, young people and adults alike! The African savannah with all the nature and animals that live there. The gathering for the celebration of Simba's birth is especially wonderful. You get such a huge feeling from the music, the singing and the visuals, beautifully done from Disney! On the African savannah, the life of the animals is like in a soap opera with all the intrigue and emotions surrounding jealousy, hatred, betrayal, revenge, guilt, sadness, remorse, resignation, forgiveness and love. The story is fairly black and white with good and bad. It is strange that the hyenas have male voices, because in real life male hyenas really have nothing to say, because the women are the boss ......
We also experienced the musical The Lion King in the circus theater Scheveningen..... Beautiful costumes and very well played and sung. It is simply an amazing experience for almost all your senses!

Nostalgia plays a big part here, the Disney movie I watched most when I was little and still enjoy it today. It was very nicely made for that time, very colorful, when you see the insects that Timon, Pumbaa and Simba eat you would almost want to eat it yourself, something I didn't with the remake (which was still a nice movie) totally not! The story and characters are very well thought out, sometimes funny, sometimes pathetic, always compelling. The music is fantastic, every song and tune I enjoy.
I could go on and on about it, but it's a classic I can watch over and over again, and one of my favorite movies ever, 5.0!
