Watched for the 2nd time 2 years ago, but I already felt like putting this video on! Woody Allen in his slapstick period, I said earlier that this was not his best from that time, but I will come back to that a bit. If you only want to see 1 movie from this slapstick era, grab this one! Annie Hall is of course the film that many rightly praise him for, but this film is also very nice!

from 3.5 to 4*

An oldie from Allen that I had never seen before, but which certainly turns out to be enjoyable. A rather farcical parody of a blockbuster like War and Peace, with many silly jokes but also a few gems. Allen plays his well-known loser type in an infectious way. However, the wonderfully young-looking Keaton outclasses him with her sparkling, comically very successful interpretation, this lady was already very good at a young age. Nice film all in all, not as wonderfully absurd as Take the Money and Run, but it comes close to that level. Especially refreshing and contrary if you compare it with the repetition projects that look like assembly lines that the old master delivers annually these days, everything was better in the past.

In the old Allens you have to look for humor in the finely brushed-out dialogues, which are full of dryness, historical references, sexual innuendo, moral and philosophical dilemmas and absurdity. Perhaps giving Woody Allen films a high rating is just good for your status as a "movie buff" and to show that you have a good understanding of his references to history and Russian literature. I just don't like it, and by the way I think his more recent films are much better. Towards the end I had had enough of his tiresome elitist bullshit.
