Hmm, I’d rather see Cagney as a criminal squeezing grapefruit over a woman’s face than a musical director. Yankee Doodle Dandy has turned into a rather bored biography of someone who becomes a big name in the musical world without much adversity. Everything goes smoothly, which is why I found this to be quite a dull and long affair.
The musical is packed with notorious patriotic songs that everyone half knows, but are not exactly high-quality. This film is also clearly intended to pump in some extra morale for the Second World War. It does get very blatant and repulsive at times, but then again, it is not a film for non-Americans.

James Cagney is often associated with crime films. In this one (and also in other comedies and musicals), his vaudeville background surfaces. Generally speaking, I like that a lot better. Along with Love Me or Leave Me (1955), I consider this the best film of his impressive career. This is partly due to the illustrious legacy of George M. Cohan that is featured, and partly to Cagney's versatility as an entertainer. I would, however, like to make a remark regarding his generally spirited acting, which is also reflected in his remarkable dance technique. Although that looks impressive, I cannot get particularly enthusiastic about it.

American biopic/musical about Broadway legend George Cohen, whose youth and later successes are chronicled via flashback, usually with the help of drawn-out song and dance scenes. It bears a strong resemblance to Footlight Parade and 42nd Street, in which Cagney also had a lead role. Just like in Babes in Arms or any Fred Astaire vehicle, the story is constantly interrupted by tedious vaudeville and irritating tap dancing. Frankly, I would rather watch a documentary about the spotted snail than this sleep-inducing bullshit. The entire film feels like an endless test of endurance that shamelessly puts your patience to the test. This rubbish really didn't need to last two hours. There is also generally a slightly too emphatic patriotism to be detected; a clear consequence of the political situation prevailing at the time. It comes across as rather forced.
