The Forbidden Kingdom plot
"The battle for eternity is the fantasy of a lifetime."
A New York teenager is obsessed with classic kung-fu movies. One day, he makes an extraordinary discovery in Chinatown: he finds the legendary Ru Yi staff of Chinese fighter Sun Wukong "the Monkey King". With the long-lost relic in his hands, the teen is unexpectedly sent back to ancient China to learn the true meaning of kung-fu. There he meets several martial arts warriors who will assist him in his mission to free Sun Wukong.

Finally a movie with Jet Li and Jackie Chan together. That must be fireworks. It's like building a super car and then putting someone behind the wheel without a driver's license. Rob Minkoff directs and it shows. He primarily makes a children's film in the style of Percy Jackson or Spy Kids. The story is said to be based on a Chinese story. Although I rather see Wizard of Oz with kung fu elements in it. We should be glad that real artists like Li and Chan are in the film, so that some fights are still worth it. The rest is filled with ugly digital images and some art and flying work.
The movie is still entertaining enough, thanks to Li and Chan, the rest is really teen oriented. However, the film begins as an ode to kung-fu. Unfortunately, that is not really reflected in the film. I hope to see Li and Chan together in a movie some other time.

Entertaining, that's for sure. But without too much content.
A childish approach, an annoying Angarano,
all terribly over the top.
It has nothing to do with real kung fu anymore.
But as a teenage adventure film it still looks great. *2.5
