The early 90s of the last century. Bai Xuemei, a young university student, has traveled with her employer to a remote part of northern China to buy medicinal herbs. After an arduous journey, they arrive in a mountain village, but when Bai Xuemei wakes up the next day, she realizes that she was lured by a trafficker, who sold her to one of the local farmers. She does not resign herself to her fate and repeatedly tries to escape, only to be taken back, beaten and raped. When she finally manages to contact her own family, another tragedy begins.

Second part of the as-yet-unfinished Blind trilogy, with which Yang Li aims to expose abuses in contemporary China. The first part was banned, and a censored version of this part is in circulation, altered in 30 points. I saw the international version on a DVD from Hong Kong, which still holds a separate status within China (and is much freer).

Exposing injustices is essentially what the film is all about. Realistic style, without much music, well-made, but unremarkable. A story that serves the message entirely and rarely becomes more than that. Deeper layers are missing. It is certainly not bad, but it undoubtedly had much more potential.

In itself a particularly dramatic and realistic-looking story, but the execution is rather shoddy. With the exception of Huang Lu, the performances are deplorable. Fortunately, the beautiful shots of the village and its surroundings provide some compensation.

A poignant drama about the trafficking of women in China's backward regions. Also a good portrayal of the harsh reality of the position of women in Chinese society. The actors are almost all locally cast, and it shows; no professional actor could have done this better. Therefore, I cannot agree with BBarbie's view regarding the performances.

During filming, it was discovered that the woman playing the character Zheng Xiaolan was also bought and was therefore effectively playing herself.
