All attention is focused on Robert Taylor and the way he plays his role as a cynical lawman. He trusts nothing and no one, which creates a nice contrast with his surroundings. He stands alone in his negative attitude and does not understand the attitude of others. He has no connection with people, given his rude attitude. Taylor is perfect for such a role with his expressive head. A good story, sharp dialogues and a cast that Taylor can keep up with well. There is not much action because the story focuses on interaction.

Great western.

A dogged marshal (Robert Taylor), nicknamed “The Hangman” because of his high search quota, is looking for John Butterfield, who is an accomplice to a robbery. When he thinks he has found him in a peaceful border town, he needs the cooperation of the beautiful Selah (Tina Louise). She must formally identify Butterfield. That sounds simple but it is not. Selah is not very keen on it. Boyard also encounters resistance from the town’s inhabitants. Butterfield is a well-liked person, as it turns out.

The Hangman is a western. The Hangman is also a character study in a western setting. A character study that focuses on the marshal. Boyard has strict principles and looks at people with a cynical eye. He is convinced that everyone is for sale. He does not believe that principles will stand up if there is a certain amount of money in return. The film places Boyard's fanaticism in a broader context that shows that Boyard's rigid beliefs do not entirely correspond to reality. The film shows the movements that make the (anti)hero doubt his rigid view. The rigid Boyard begins to wonder about things. About the correctness of his principles. About his prejudiced view of humanity. About his image of a corrupt, treacherous and lonely world.

Oh, who wouldn't see the value of his principles diminish when looking at the feisty and beautiful Selah. A woman with much less life experience but with a sexy look and a fresh perspective. A woman with the right equipment to shake Boyard's blind fanaticism and rigid convictions. Director Curtiz makes his penultimate western a minimalist spectacle that captivates. Only a few locations. A manageable number of characters. Interesting characters. A straightforward story. Fine and pointed dialogues. A bit of humor too. Yes, The Hangman is a pleasant western.
