Two Flags West plot

"UNFURLS THE BANNER TO HIGH ADVENTURE!"

On December 8, 1863, President Lincoln made a statement granting freedom to prisoners of war of the Confederacy provided they join the Union and help defend the western frontier against Native Americans. Col. Tucker is one of the inmates who agree. His Union commander, Kenniston, hates all things Confederate and blames them for his brother's death. Kenniston has more problems; he has fallen in love with his sister-in-law Elena, but refuses to admit it out of love for his brother.

A very good example of how penetrating and beautiful black and white film can be.
Beautiful shots and the action scenes are very well done, although you have to wait a while for some serious action. But then it really hits the mark. The attack by the Indians on the fort can certainly be called impressive.
Very good performance by Jeff Chandler as the harsh commander of the fort. The scene in which he walks to his death is oppressive. Beautifully depicted.
A selection of actors who guarantee quality, provided the story cooperates... and it does.
Cavalry westerns are not my favorites, but this one is on the "well worth revisiting" list.

Offhand, I cannot come up with a "Cavalry western" that has been rated 4* by me.

In any case, there won't be many.

"Two Flags West" is an exception, because this is a strong film in all areas.

Story, setting, and acting.

A big-budget western too.

Never have I seen such a large, impressive fort, and rarely so many extras (especially Indians)

Factor in the big names in the cast and you know where the money went.

Considering the result, it was justified expenditure.

The John Ford "Cavalry westerns" may have cost even more, but for me they can't match this one.

The praise trumpet (or bugle ) has already been played here by fellow MM users, I'll add one more blow.

I have rarely seen Chandler go so crazy as he does here, and the rest of the cast, including the supporting roles, give everything they have got.

Director Robert Wise did not make many westerns, but in 1948 he already proved that he had what it took with the strong "Blood on the Moon".

Left aside for far too long.

Would love to see it again in the future.

Prisoner of war soldiers of the Confederacy can regain their freedom if they help the Union defend itself against the Indians in the west. Joseph Cotten's platoon does so and is installed on a small post. However, the North-South conflict continues and of course there is also a beautiful lady there. Too little action. Actually this is more drama than western. It's nice that the loyalties are still being tested between North, South, the Indians and the lady. The side of the Native Americans is of course completely underexposed, but the final battle is caused by a clear provocation by the Americans. Then, of course, back to our white heroes.
