“It's been a long time since someone wrote a really good book in jail.”

Great movie. Wonder Boys has a somewhat slow, but pleasant tempo. The characters in the film are often high, and that's how you experience the film. The film has a somewhat dry and melancholy humor and I can appreciate that.

Douglas, Downey Jr. and Maguire can of course also handle the dry dialogues well. The whole story about a writer who can't finish his second book after his successful first book is well put together. Grady Tripp (Douglas) has many more problems and within a few days he comes into contact with all kinds of (colorful) people who want something from him. And the joint and drink are never far away. The result is a fine film with an excellent Michael Douglas.

Drama with a weak story that –just like the professor's manuscript– flies in all directions. The strong cast cannot prevent it from being a setback all in all.

Curtis Lee Hanson made many crime films and thrillers. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) and the neo-noir LA Confidential (1997) are good examples of this. His film Wonder Boys proves that Curtis also manages to cope well in a more light-hearted genre.

In Wonder Boys the elements of crime and thriller return, but the criminal events are topped with a layer of humor. The film is set in an intellectual milieu. All characters are connected to the local university. In the movie, that doesn't stop the characters from getting things wrong with admirable persistence, acting stupid, or simply not being capable enough to live a normal life outside the comfort of college. Their idiosyncratic behavior continues and leads to bizarre events.

The film uses a mocking tone regarding its characters and the university world in which they reside. The university world is like a big bubble. A closed world from which the inhabitants can hardly or never escape. A shining example of such a resident is Professor Grady (Michael Douglas). He teaches literature, does so on autopilot and once wrote a successful novel. The world was open to him, but he became so mentally overloaded that he crawled back into his university shell. Grady is indecisive, very preoccupied with himself and incapable of any basic self-reflection. He is exemplary of the species.

The characters are wonderfully laughable. Together with a number of protagonists, the film embarks on a ramble through crazy characters and crazy events and as such offers a series of tragicomic one-act plays. The film does not have a clear path that leads somewhere. The movie is just very entertaining.
