I wasn't sure what to expect when I first met Aki Kaurismäki. The man without a past is a dryly comic drama that is hard to keep track of. Excellent scenes here and there, but plot-wise I was a bit hungry despite the promising premise. A film with many stylistic images, very sober too. It all looks a bit gloomy, but that is erased with the necessary optimism or humorous approach.

The humor that is discussed is absurd, but it is not so much cold-hearted, but rather tragic. For example, he is pronounced dead, but suddenly he stands up like half a mummy and puts his crooked nose in the right place and he is gone. The dialogues are also dry when he suddenly starts talking after a few days. "So, so you can talk," he is told, to which he replies: "Yes, I just had nothing to say before that."

Not bad, but maybe just wasn't in the right mood to see this kind of movie. I may have to review and re-evaluate it later, though I certainly didn't think it was bad.

"What do I owe you?" "If you ever find me face down in the gutter, turn me around to my back."

The man-man without a past. My first Finnish film and I'm done! What a strange film, wonderfully refreshing! Very realistic without any frills. Sober, gloomy, full of dry humor, mysterious quotes and strange characters. On to the next Finnish film or to the next Aki Kaurismäki!
