Yeah, actually Luke Wilson should have just stayed dead.

As a bonus, the DVD contains a 10-minute film in which all snuff fragments are stitched together. Actually a bit bizarre that the makers assume that as a "normal" DVD viewer you would just sit there and watch it for fun.

Incidentally, I can imagine that a real snuff movie would be a lot more detailed, with much more close-ups of faces in panic, wounds inflicted on the spot, etc. In Less than zero (the book) there is a scene where a lot of bored teenagers are watching it at a party, very gloomy.

And doesn't Frank Whaley steal the show in this movie? His almost genuine indignation when he accuses David and Amy that they might as well have stabbed the dead cop in the back themselves...

Nice though.

Antal is a pretty solid director and it looks like this was his first adventure in America. So that looks nice. As a director he was never the best, but one who understood his genre and that was clearly thriller. From his side, they often turn out very interesting.

Visually it looks neat. The decorations are on-point and the film is shot tight. Especially the tunnels under the ground are very atmospheric and that's where the most exciting scenes take place. Cinematography is also solid and modern, and the editing is good enough. Soundtrack was a bit too noisy for me, especially since the most exciting moments come from quieter scenes.

I also liked the acting. Wilson is playing a serious role now and as far as I'm concerned he's doing it just fine. Beckinsale can certainly be there, although this may be an easy role for her. Whaley is the cutest though, though he's never menacing or scary. Especially an amusing slut that just pops by.

In terms of suspense, it is never terrifying, but it does have its sequences. Earlier I mentioned the tunnels, but other scenes are also doable. In the end, it's only the entertainment that does its job, because it won't be very exciting. It's all just a bit too busy to get exciting, Antal could have been a little more subtle at times.

But it is so much fun. Fast pace, short playing time and a captivating introduction to the characters. It's all atmospheric enough, but with more nerve-racking tension this would of course have been better. You don't get to see a lot of horror, but it does want to get quite gruesome a few times. It remains an American horror film and they are often a bit braver. Nice movie, good entertainment.
