Over 20 years old, but still overwhelming. Luc Besson already showed with Léon that he is an innovator in action films by focusing on cold-blooded killers with some background, hard action. That in contrast to the American films that rely more on chases and explosions. Nikita came just before Léon and is in the same direction in terms of style. Besson clearly set a trend and influenced many later films with this Nikita. Just think of mr. Wolfe in Pulp Fiction of Alice from Resident Evil.

I myself thought that a remake of this would not be bad, but at the same time I also realized that a remake would never work. (I do know that there is a sequel/remake and a TV series). I haven't seen it yet, but I think the raw edges are gone and figures like Nikita or Victor are difficult to approach. Again enjoying Jean-Hugues Anglade which I could already appreciate in 37°2 le matin.

After seeing it at least 25 years ago, and all I remembered about that was Reno, the bathtub scene and the fact that I didn't think it was all that great, I tried it again with fresh courage and the expectation that I would like it more now. find.

And it starts well, the characters and the brutal violence in the pharmacy in the opening scenes, promise a lot and are des Besson's to say the least. But then it collapses like a pudding. The moments of her assignments are well built up in that sense, are exciting and have a shock effect and the necessary raw violence, but besides that the characters are not interesting enough and the film seems to be missing something. The film does have a nice dark atmosphere at certain moments and what is beautiful to see are the recognitions with Leon. The camera work, the music, Jean Reno himself in a similarly cool role, how the characters react, Nikita is a precursor and practice moment for the better work that Leon will be called.

Karyo does well in a smooth, unfathomable role that is always appropriate for him and Parrilaud also plays her role with verve from hardness to emotion and from loose cannon in the beginning to guided projectile. Sometimes she is indeed irritating, but she plays the role well in all versatility.

Too bad, the script is disappointing and the film is not captivating enough.

A long time ago I got to know Point of No Return (1993) via television without knowing that it is a remake. The original is the best version after all. Anne Parillaud plays three characters in one: the delinquent with the messy hair, the trained state terrorist and the young woman who would like to lead a normal life. Although she had no experience, she gave shape to one of the most captivating action heroines. If she's named after that Elton John song, Nikita can't be her birth name. The best secondary role is for Jean Reno as Le Nettoyeur - the unfeeling robot who comes to clean the place.

The idea that the French secret service is using a convict for dangerous missions is questionable but not impossible. Humor is in the things that go wrong, like when someone smashes the window of a pharmacy while they have the key. The sequence of locations provides variety, from the blue neon light in the pharmacy to the generous sunlight of Venice. The best scene is the one in the restaurant with the bricked up toilet window and the ensuing escape. Éric Serra's synthesizer music, typical of that period, reinforces the feeling that it all takes place in a great intoxication.
