With Jim Broadbent in the leading role and Charlotte Rampling and Emily Mortimer in crucial supporting roles, you almost automatically expect the acting to be good. And fortunately the cast lives up to expectations in that regard, although I find the resemblance between Billy Howle [as the young Tony Webster] and Eddie Redmayne striking and a bit distracting.

Excellent acting with some strong moments, especially in the conversations that old Tony Webster [Jim Broadbent] has with his ex-wife [Harriet Walter, also excellent] and his daughter Susie [Michelle Dockery]. The film revolves around a diary left to him by the mother of his old girlfriend Veronica [Charlotte Rampling], but which he cannot see because Veronica refuses to give him that diary. The letter and the thoughts in a diary bring back the necessary memories and in flashback we look back on the complex relationship between Tony and Susie, in which Tony's school friends and Susie's family play an important role.

The problem with the film is that the plot has a somewhat too high GTST content [or ATWT, whichever you prefer] and therefore turns out to be a bit too complicated. I couldn't grasp the 'reveal' at the end and it therefore missed dramatic impact. That is the major shortcoming of this film, because the screenplay meanders a bit from one event to the next, without any dramatic build-up to the most dramatic moments. You could explain this because the flashback is told from Tony's perspective and that after all these years he can look back on those moments quite soberly, but that makes the film a bit cold and distant and not nearly as compelling as it could have been. can and should be.

Meh...I didn't like it much. It was not the fault of the cast because they play well, the story is just not that interesting. It's all a bit dull, an old man reminiscing about his former sweetheart. The denouement has something to it, but it is not too clear, we can only speculate about what actually happened.

Mediocre film about a sullen old divorced man who looks back with regret on his student days and his relationship with Veronica. Through a will, he searches for the friends from back then that he has lost sight of.

Although Broadbent does a good job overall, I found it all quite plaintive. And I'm not the only one, because his ex who has to listen to it all, is also gradually getting tired of it. Fortunately, they still have their pregnant, consciously unmarried daughter who will soon give them a grandchild.

A little later, old Veronica comes into the picture in the form of Charlotte Rampling. No, I don't like that one, with the exception of Benedetta. Although she is right not wanting to have anything to do with Tony anymore, I don't like her posture while acting. Furthermore, a film that does not stand out anywhere above par. Neither mussels nor fish, just not...
