Moderate Soderbergh.

Although I'm not quite sure whether that's up to Soderbergh himself. I'm usually quite allergic to these kinds of films, in that respect it's actually not that bad. On the other hand, it's one of the least Soderberghs I've seen.

I always think Roberts is bad, and this film is certainly no exception. Annoying traits ensure that her character never actually becomes as endearing as was clearly intended. Eckhart is also terrible in this film, the only one who can stand is Finney.

I don't know the real story, but the word "based" must have played some role, because the course is very cinematic. Predictable too, but that's part and parcel of these kinds of films of course.

Visually there is not much to experience, the soundtrack is striking, especially because it does not really stand out. You could expect a more bombastic/mellow score, but Soderbergh keeps it subtle. Still nice.

It also took a very long time, but that is understandable from the point of view of the set-up. It just doesn't work all that great.

“You're a lawyer?”

“NO, no... I hate lawyers. I only work for them.”

Skillfully made film by Soderbergh. Soderbergh's films always have a pleasant flow about them, and Erin Brockovich is never bored either. The story is interesting, but it's the actors that really take the material to the next level.

Julia Roberts might just be playing the part of her life as Erin Brockovich, a woman who hasn't caught her mouth and has an iron will. The interplay with the incomparable Finney yields many highlights. It's a joy to watch these two actors play together. The story provides a nice courtroom drama where the end is actually already predetermined. The downside is that Brockovich has (had) a seemingly difficult life, but that in the film she easily gets everything thrown into her lap. Soderbergh makes Erin Brockovich more of a feel-good film than a drama film. Nothing wrong with that.

A court drama, but without a large court scene. But it's the same with an underdog's lawsuit against a great wealthy power where money matters only. In itself it is not a special film and you know how such a film generally goes. But Julia Roberts and Albert Finney are quite attuned to each other. Never really understood what was so special about Julia Roberts, but it certainly isn't bad. This is a typical American drama, but sometimes looks like an average true story that fortunately has been given a small update by a strong cast and director so as not to disappear as a TV movie.
