Daddy Long Legs plot

During a trip to France, millionaire Jervis Pendelton sees an 18-year-old girl in an orphanage. Although she charms him, he takes the age difference into account and does not impose himself on her. He secretly finances her studies at the University of New England. When he visits her after 3 years during a dance, he does not tell her that he is her benefactor. They both fall in love, but first have to deal with the necessary problems, which makes it questionable whether they can eventually get back together.

A bit creepy.

Apparently a well-known story, which has been filmed several times. I don't know how the other versions turn out, but Daddy Long Legs looks a bit... weird in 2015. Now the film itself also refers to the romance as not done a number of times, but it is mainly the way in which Astaire "buys" Caron that makes things a bit uncomfortable. There isn't much romance involved either.

Otherwise an innocent film, with the typical Astaire characteristics. Although I thought Caron's dream at the end was more like a Gene Kelly film. Caron is a fairly annoying actress, certainly not a great match for Astaire. And Astaire, who already looks a year older in this film, but appears quite sympathetic.

It all takes a very long time and especially those long dance sequences towards the end are a bit too much. It's also a shame that the romance between Astaire and Caron doesn't really work, but I think it's highly recommended for fans of these types of cheerful musicals.

1.0*

What a wonderful movie. Escapism from the old days. Excellent roles by Fred Astaire, Leslie Caron, Fred Clark and Thelma Ritter in a production in which the overall picture is correct. Absolutely entertaining; great musical show numbers, swinging, nice humor, excellent script... Despite the subject, the film manages to radiate an innocence that was only possible in the fifties, albeit helped by the Hayes code. Real feel good with a neatly finished production and that can be a good thing. They don't make'm like this anymore

In his old musicals Astaire always played a bit of a stupid idiot, but here he is a lot more serious.

and life wiser and that is a lot more pleasant to look at.

as a musical it is less so, although the film has its nice moments, but sometimes it is just a bit too long-winded.

As a rom-com it is good enough, although it is not a great one.
