Playing by Heart plot

"If romance is a mystery, there's only one way to figure it out."

Eleven connected people work in Los Angeles. Paul produces Hannah's cooking show and they get into a big fight when she asks about an affair he's having. Mark is dying of AIDS and his mother comes to him to talk about the truth. Men have hurt Meredith in the past, so she rejects Trent's charms, but he persists. Joan tries to hit on Keenan. A couple meet for sex, but she doesn't want a steady relationship. Hugh tells tragic stories to women in bars. At the end of the week, these parallel stories come together.

Strong mosaic film with a fast pace and, above all, good acting. Not every storyline is equally convincing, causing attention to waver occasionally, but the level of acting keeps it engaging enough.

Above average

Entertaining film, but the DVD cover stated that it was a “sexy romantic comedy,” and besides the fact that there was nothing sexy about it, I found it to be more of a drama than a comedy. The acting was fine, though, as might be expected from these well-known names.

Ugh, it's one of those braids.

In the English-speaking world, we call that an 'ensemble film,' but specifically the less clearly defined business where the storylines converge in a way hidden from the viewer. Something that was in vogue for a while, perhaps between the mid-90s and mid-2000s. And fortunately forgotten by now, because as this film demonstrates, it is rarely possible to make anything interesting out of it.

The biggest mistake is perhaps that just about none of the people we follow are even remotely likeable, with the possible exception of Jolie and Connery – but even in that respect, it’s rather meh. Even the bit of AIDS awareness, however well-intentioned it may have been at the time, comes across as wrong, too late, too complacent.

Vilmos Zsigmond did create some very beautiful images of it occasionally, that much is true. But the ship had already sunk; you can come up with your most beautiful composition ever, but it won't help a damn. Just like the fact that PJ Harvey is mentioned in the soundtrack credits, but Angelene didn't catch my eye anywhere.
