Antonia looks back on her life from her deathbed. After her long absence, she returns to her former village with her daughter Danielle. Danielle grows up into a young, determined woman who wants a child but would rather not have a man. She in turn has a super-gifted daughter who develops a close friendship with the village philosopher. Meanwhile, Antonia finds a good friend and lover in her neighbor. The gossip continues, but despite that, Antonia goes her own way. When her granddaughter also gives birth to a girl, the circle seems complete. Especially when later it turns out that this girl is the perfect reincarnation of Antonia...

The woman takes center stage in this Oscar-winning film, which is really just a chronicle of a farming family. How sad, nostalgic and certainly well acted. And speaking of actors, there was also a tiny role for a still young Johan Heldenbergh.

Mediocre movie. I thought it was all very old-fashioned. Maybe this was the intention, but it's definitely not my taste. This looks and feels like a cheap old Dutch film, just like the acting that I couldn't do much with. The film looks at a long period and is quite episodic and never really gets under the skin. Visually also boring, except for a few beautiful exterior pictures. It's not really all that bad, but it's a mystery how this film could ever win an Oscar. 2.0*.
