At the end of the 2020s, Britain has become a totalitarian state. Against this backdrop, young woman Evey (Natalie Portman) is saved from death by a masked man, better known as 'V' (Hugo Weaving). V is unparalleled and charismatic but above all a master of trickery and deceit and highly skilled in martial arts. He unleashes a revolution when he blows up two important government buildings and takes over the government-controlled radio and TV station. V urges his civilian friends to rise up against the tyranny and oppression of the inhumane reign of terror.

I had expected more from this.
V for Vendetta didn't start off badly, though. The scene in the alley, where we are first introduced to V, and the scene on the roof with the explosions looked pretty good. But very soon, the film failed to really hold my attention. For nearly 2 hours, it is solely about criticism of society and justice and blah blah blah…
All that philosophical nonsense really wasn't my cup of tea. This film doesn't have much to offer in terms of action and suspense either. The only action scene that did eventually occur was, to boot, really ugly. That Matrix-esque slow motion, I really hate it.
The character V could have been something, had he not been wearing an idiotic laughing mask. He tries to come across as cool, but fails completely. The only bright spot for me is Natalie Portman, a really good actress who plays very convincingly.
Still a disappointment, especially when I see that this film is in the top 250. 1.5*

A very enjoyable film, which shows how one man resists his government and eventually achieves success. With his voice, Hugo Weaving is the perfect person to play the ever-masked V., and Natalie Portman also does quite well. Additionally, we have a number of strong British supporting roles from Stephen Rea, Stephen Fry, and John Hurt.
The beginning and the end of the film are the best, the middle section is slightly weaker. The scenes where V. is not yet really known and steps out for the first time are particularly good. The imprisonment and torture of Portman are quite strong, and the ending is beautifully filmed in combination with beautiful, fitting music.
