For the soldiers returning from the first war, there was unemployment and misery. However, Prohibition offered the dream opportunity for some to make it in the illegal circuit of alcohol distribution. Eddie Bartlett is also such a figure who lived like a prince in the 1920s in a New York that had a golden age. Because Prohibition was ultimately an extremely foolish measure: never before had so much drinking been done in "speakeasies". This almost forgotten time comes to life in a crime drama with old-school gangsters and with a beautiful Priscilla Lane as Jane who managed to intoxicate me with her voice and beauty. The entire tragedy of the film lies in Bartlett's unrequited love for this young woman. Bogart plays a bad guy. Definitely a fun one to watch. Cagney was truly a charismatic actor.

What flair this film has. James Cagney is absolutely great in this rise and fall gangster story, alongside excellent roles from an ambiguous Humphrey Bogart and the lovely nightclub singer Priscilla Lane. Gladys George as the nightclub manager is also great.

The Roaring Twenties has an excellent scenario that is not boring for a second (despite the relatively long running time) where the viewer can also enjoy the sharp dialogues, spiced here and there with sarcasm. In that context, I think the meeting between Cagney and Lane in the taxi is one of the top scenes.

In addition to a story of individuals, we are shown a vision of developments in American society in the 1920s, with voice-over and footage that outlines the political and social context, all in a tight direction. Of course the stock market crash and bootlegging are discussed. At times it seems like a documentary with human interest. And with these types of films you know that there will be nightclub moments with that great jazz, after which the Jazz Age was named. The storyline is sufficiently realistic, helped by the announcement in the opening credits that the film is based on true events and individuals (on behalf of author Mark Hellinger on whose work the screenplay is based).

Direction by Raoul Walsh and photography by Ernest Haller are a feast for the eyes: excellent mise-en-scene, good pacing and better shadow work.

You don't expect a boring film from a title like The Roaring Twenties, and fortunately that promise is fulfilled. For me this is one of the best gangster films of the thirties.

One of the better gangster films and also a nice snapshot of the times from 1919 to the late 1920s.
Cagney is the center here in one of his better roles as a gangster with a small heart who, for the umpteenth time, sees the love he feels for a woman not being reciprocated and who will ultimately pay for it with death.
Bogart once again in his role as an absolute villain who kills corpses to achieve his goal and these two will of course inevitably collide.
the rest of the roles are well filled and the story remains interesting until the dramatic ending.
