“I think I'll go to sleep and dream about piles of gold getting bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Strong classic by John Huston. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a film about three men who go in search of gold, but it is also a film about greed, madness and what can happen when you become possessed by money and power.

Howard (Walter Huston) and Curtin (Holt) realize in time that there's more than money and gold, and they can finally laugh at their misfortune. Dobbs (Bogart) goes the other way and sells his soul to the devil. With a tragic and fatal outcome. The cinematography is brilliant and the film feels like an adventurous journey through the sweltering landscape of Mexico. A violent and tragic, but sometimes funny and memorable journey.

For me personally this remains one of the stronger Bogart roles I've seen so far, sometimes the film is a bit on the chaotic side but fortunately not too long-winded for its running time. Remains a deserved classic!

The opening of the movie. Bogart places a windswept vagrant in a sweltering Tampico where he begs a rich American in a white suit for some food and drink money (a nice cameo from John Huston). The atmosphere is set immediately. A little later after the experience with Bogart's job, a key scene actually follows in the dingy dormitory. The conversation between Walter Huston, Tim Holt and Humphrey Bogart sums up what it will be about: greed and what it can do to a person.
The film revolves around psychology and mutual relationships of the three prospectors. And there is time enough to explore that as they are at the mercy of each other in the mountains. Walter Huston is extremely important because of the color his performance gives to this b&w film. Furthermore, in my opinion Humphrey Bogart plays one of his best roles ever. Initially he seems to be open to reason, he is gradually overpowered by paranoia until it gets completely out of hand. Tim Holt is somewhat in between the two characters, perhaps the most 'normal' of the bunch.
The captivating plot is supported and led by well-crafted side intrigues all the way to the spectacular ending. And to be honest: punish how one can still add a positive note after the anti-climax. But it may be there for sure. A movie that keeps reverberating. Also because – as expected – he was beautifully shot by Huston and supported by a fine score by Max Steiner.
