Lucía y el Sexo plot
Lucía, a young waitress at a restaurant in central Madrid, flees to a quiet, deserted island in the Mediterranean when she learns that her boyfriend, a writer with whom she has lived for six years, has disappeared. There, bathed in the relaxed atmosphere of fresh air and the hot sun, Lucia discovers the dark corners of their relationship. As if they are the forbidden passages from a book that the author now, from afar, gives her permission to read.

Why oh why have people here ventured into that pretentious bullshit where the present is interwoven with the past and fiction with reality? That is deadly, especially in the case of a very simple plot. Without that sluggishness, the film could have been half an hour shorter, kept up the pace, and maybe the emotions got across. A simple plot should be kept simple, there is nothing wrong with that; wanting to make a simple plot "complicated", on the other hand...
And that is quite a pity, given that all the other facets of cinema that I find important have been convincingly presented, starting with the cast. The very tasty Paz Vega takes the cake, all the more regrettably that Lucia disappears into the background after a while.
But director Julio Medem also deserves some feathers - except that he goes wrong with his narrative structure. Visually, this film is a gem. Certainly at the beach house there are many beautiful shots, where the sultry strongly has the upper hand, not least because of the successful use of colours. Musically I'm a little less convinced.
Calling the sex scenes realistic is a bit too much for me (or if cumming over and over is the norm, I should raise my bar), but they are done in style and not with clothes on and under the sheets. That's something too.

Sultry, sexy, sad and stunning. Lucia y el Sexo is one moment a penetrating and enchanting film experience, the next the non-chronological narrative style will crack your brain. Director Julio Medem gives you some answers in the last 15 minutes, but also leaves a lot to the viewer's interpretation.
The scenes on the island (superbly filmed with a blue filter) feel like heaven, every other moment ending up in Madrid, which must feel like hell for the characters due to the dramatic developments. The sex scenes are well filmed, and actors like Vega, Ulloa and Nimri know how to handle the material. Great acting, in a movie to dream away to. Or sweating when you wake up.
