An ideal film to dismiss with three and a half stars, and I can understand and share that score. The weaknesses are too easily recognizable (too long, poorly developed storyline) to consider this a masterpiece; however, due to the brilliant portrayal of the sporting moments themselves, Grand Prix remains a film that every cinephile must see. Also mandatory viewing for those who find current Formula 1 stuffy and a judged sport; it was certainly different in the past, but not necessarily better. Grand Prix is perhaps an unintentional indictment of old-school Formula 1 that definitely deserves to be seen. Already in the first minutes, a driver flies straight into the Mediterranean Sea in Monte Carlo, and this fate is sustained for almost three hours, culminating in one of the main protagonists dying in a fatal accident during the final race, while the race mercilessly continues and minutes later the winner is celebrated: bizarre and gruesome, for those willing to see it. The hero of a story is an indifferent, somewhat blank-eyed man who causes his teammate to crash and then hooks up with his wife.... How crude do you want to make it? . Formula 1 drivers used to be almost modern gladiators without much morality, the never-subtle Frankenheimer seems to want to imply here. Some sympathy should go to their stunningly beautiful wives, although there appear to be a few calculating bourgeois among them as well. Interesting film and vision, I can't say otherwise, just a shame about that bad movie poster.

Good film about a number of racing drivers battling for the Formula 1 championship. Beautiful cinematography that delivers spectacular footage during the races (also nicely edited). Although a critical note is placed on the sport here and there, it is primarily the romantic entanglements that dominate between the races. And for that, the film is a bit too long, but it all looks beautiful. Easily 3.5 stars.

A beautifully designed racing film from 1966, where the screaming engines of the racing cars of the time thrilled the audience. Montand is by far the best in his role alongside the stoic Mason and soloist Bedford. The racing action comes across well, as do the intrigues, financial interests, and interpersonal relationships. A must-see for racing fans. Franchise Hardy, Eva Marie Saint, and Jessica Walter carry the female part with panache. 3.7* Available on a beautiful remastered double DVD with 5.1 surround and many extras, including Formula 1 in the 60s.
