"Through Treachery, Passion and Courage, She Built an Empire"
At the request of Tsarina Elizabeth, fifteen-year-old Princess Sophia is married off to Peter, the Russian heir to the throne, under the name Catharina. However, Catherine has nothing in common with him and she falls in love with the young nobleman Saltykov. After giving birth to an heir to the throne, the child is immediately taken from her and her lover is sent abroad, after which Catherine feels very lonely. When Elizabeth dies, a fierce struggle for power ensues.
