This Boy's Life plot

"He looked like the ideal husband. He seemed like the perfect father. That's just what they needed. But that's not what they got."

Caroline Wolff and her son Toby start a new life in Seattle. There Caroline meets a polite garage owner, Dwight, who already has three children from a first marriage. They marry, but it soon becomes apparent that the man can't vent Toby, because he has a rich father, and never misses an opportunity to humiliate him. Toby and his mother try to live with the impossible situation, but Toby is unhappy and wants to run away.

This Boy's Life is a strong piece of family drama that falls and stands with very good acting. Everything is very realistic and DiCaprio's acting as young as he is already rock solid.

After this film, DiCaprio also played a star role in What's Eating Gilbert in the same year

grape? This once again confirms his acting ability. In This Boy's Life he plays

also great, and De Niro also fully meets expectations, sometimes against the edge

from over the top who as hard-hearted stepfather Dwight is a true tease for DiCaprio's

Toby, fueled especially by an apparent disgust for the rich (Toby son of a rich

father), and who will raise Toby by his standards. And that goes sometimes, with

impressive raw-realistic scenes, hard and explosive, with an increasing

desperation in Toby. By the way, he didn't understand that Dwight right away, and came

which with me is already unsympathetic, rather self-righteous and manipulatively nice. Ellen

Barkin as the mother is certainly doing fine too, but her playing is overshadowed by it

acting violence from De Niro and DiCaprio. Intense drama, with occasional bright spots such as the

friendship that develops between Toby and the boy with whom he had another earlier in the film

robber wet.

Focus on the good stuff

The strong and weak element of This Boy's Life is that it feels fairly mundane. It is a situation in which we ourselves, or someone from your immediate environment, could all end up in a greater or lesser extent. In that sense, Tobias Wolff's memoirs, on which this film is based, feel almost mundane. The story is set in the 1950s, of course. While this is positive on the one hand, it can also cause criticism that the story isn't unique enough to please a section of the audience.

I personally enjoyed the small scale of this story, which is reinforced by an excellent cast. It's nice to see Leonardo DiCaprio at the beginning of his career, alongside two acting greats (Robert de Niro and Ellen Barkin) at such a young age already acting the stars of heaven. The era of the 50s is well portrayed, and the fact that the production is almost 30 years old did not bother me anywhere.

3.5*
