This movie managed to get me quiet despite being very sweet.
And if a movie doesn't leave me unmoved, it means the movie is good.
Loved the acting of the cast, many parts where there is no speaking, the actors show their facial expressions very well so you know what they mean.
The music wasn't too bad either.
Some parts were good especially where Jackie sings to his father and the father briefly appears as a ghost was nicely done.
The phrases that were spoken were well done and nice to actually hear their voices as were all the songs where Jackie actually sang.

3.5 star

The first sound film to catch on with the general public. I find it a bit strange because even before then that film must have been very corny. Al Jolson always has to choose between a career as a singer on Broadway or for his parents with Jewish background, whose father prefers Al Jolson to succeed him as cantor. It all becomes very problematic with intense emotions back and forth. All a bit exaggerated, but there is one big attraction in this film: the moment when there is going to be speaking and singing. It's not much (it's mostly a silent movie anyway), but I found it strangely enough to see and hear it quite fascinating.

Well finally seen. Special film that is partly silent and partly talkie. While that's weird, it doesn't seem unnatural. Still in the silent era in terms of acting, though. The story is not very special, but it still works for the film, visually there is nothing special and the pace is okay. Songs are quickly forgotten. It's not all that bad, but if this wasn't 'the first' then the film would already be forgotten. 2.5*.
