A Taste of Honey plot

"We don’t ask for life. We have it thrust upon us."

The film is about the personal histories of the 'little people' in the big cities. The camera took to the streets and filmed in the slums, not in the expensive neighborhoods. The harsh reality was no longer hushed up, but was given a place in British cinema. In A Taste of Honey, it is the harsh reality of Jo (Rita Tushingham) and her mother Helen (Dora Bryan). They seem doomed to each other, until Jo finds a room of his own and has an idyllic 'romance' with the gay Geoffrey (Murray Melvin).

Highly recommended as a look at the 50s. A really captivating film, with rather black/white characters, where the stereotypical homosexual is one of the less clear-cut.

"Angry Young Men" film with brilliant performances by newcomer Rita Tushingham, an unknown Dora Bryan (Brenda Blethyn would not have improved her in her role) and Murray Melvin.

It is raw, social realism delivered with touching simplicity, typical street scenes and cutting dialogues between mother and daughter.

Good film about a teenage girl who, together with her mother, does not have much. This social drama is at times still presented quite light-heartedly (that is certainly also due to the rather uninhibited role of Rita Tushingham). The film forms a beautiful picture of the times (and not only because of the location work). A film that was still somewhat ahead of its time, because of a number of subjects that are addressed.
