"Sex. Love. Marriage. Some people don't know when to quit."
Rachel and Mark are both journalists from Washington. They meet at a wedding and not long after that they get married themselves. Soon they have a daughter named Annie. But one day, Rachel finds out that Mark was having an affair during her pregnancy.

A nice film in which a man and woman meet at a wedding and tie the knot for the second time. In terms of the story, it cannot exactly be called original. There are a number of good scenes, but it does sag a bit during the second half. Naturally, Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson do not disappoint. It is nice to see Kevin Spacey here in his film debut, and the frequently recurring song Coming Around Again by Carly Simon fits the film well.

When the lead roles in a film are assigned to Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, your evening is already partially a success. It is somewhat easier to accept that such a film is quite poor in terms of substance. Nevertheless, Heartburn suffers from this a bit at some point. Streep and Nicholson are, as expected, convincing, and the 80s atmosphere, which is occasionally heavily emphasized by a bit of synthesizer music, has a certain endearing quality. But the film eventually starts to drag, as there turns out to be not much more to tell than that Nicholson's character cheats a few times. The second half is mainly about watching how Streep deals with this. That is done quite nicely, but in terms of pacing, it falters a bit because all sorts of interchangeable supporting characters have to be brought in as well. It helps, however, that the film continues to feel quite lighthearted, so it never really becomes tedious. But at some point you've had enough and you still have forty-five minutes to go... Incidentally, it is quite nice to spot Jeff Daniels, Catherine O'Hara, Kevin Spacey, and Milos Forman in supporting roles.
