“This has got to be the weirdest day of my life... well, so far.”

The star of Look Who's Talking is of course Bruce Willis as baby/toddler/toddler Mikey. I've seen the film countless times, but its inner dialogues remain hilarious. Travolta and Alley also have a nice chemistry.

The story is standard and at times it all falls apart. Especially when Travolta and Alley are not together or when Mikey is out of the picture, the cracks start to show. But from the wonderful song by The Beach Boys in the beginning (and the very comical images) you are watching this film with a smile. And that counts.

A film that I often enjoyed watching as a child, but with a review I only now see that the film is actually not for children at all. The Baby's Day Out-esque poster and the premise of a baby with a funny voice seem aimed at a young audience, but the target audience for this romantic comedy is clearly for people in their twenties and thirties. The film tells of a single mother and her search for an ideal father. With jokes about sex, pregnancy and tax returns. I think that most jokes used to pass me completely by, I especially saw a film in which Bruce Willis provides a baby - and later toddler - with a voice and sprinkles with comedic comments.

The latter still works by the way. Willis may have been an action hero through Die Hard, but before that he was primarily a comedic actor. And it does it nicely, better than the Autopilot Willis that we've been seeing mostly in recent years. Also fine are protagonists Alley and Travolta. Necessary in a film like this is of course the chemistry between the bridle and that's a must here, they seem to have a lot of fun in their role. With Olympia Dukakis, George Segal, Abe Vigoda and Don S. Davis, the film also has a few funny supporting roles. Look Who's Talking is never hilarious. Heavily moving or stylistically fascinating not for a second. But it is a sympathetic thirty-something romkom about babies, sex and bookkeeping.

3 stars.

Saw it again recently. Was a popular movie at the time and several sequels have been made. Thought it was fun and original at the time, but this film can't stand the test of time. Especially the screaming acting of Kirstie Alley causes headaches. But the movie is still the same so I've changed. Giving a rating wouldn't be fair
