The original (feature) film is a disappointment. Judging by the description, I expected something like a neorealist version of Noel Coward's subtle and sublime Brief Encounter (1945), but this is not it. The story about ending an extramarital affair largely consists of repetition and lacks interesting developments when the protagonists sometimes wander around Rome's central station somewhat aimlessly for long periods. Occasionally that station is packed, then suddenly almost empty; it is all a bit sloppy.

Fine acting by Jennifer Jones, but the once great Montgomery Clift was already past his prime by then. All in all, a disappointing film by De Sica.

That Vittorio De Sica and David O. Selznick had two conflicting visions is evident in the result. At times it is pure Hollywood melodrama, but then there are a few scenes that feel neorealistic, when they meet poor people at the station. A second problem is that Montgomery Clift is supposed to portray an Italian but does not speak with the correct accent. It is a pity, because there are moments when it starts to pick up pace. Jennifer Jones has a few emotional scenes in which she struggles with the dilemma between duty and passion. Teen actor Richard Beymer has a nice cameo role.

Jennifer Jones' melodramatic acting is occasionally a bit too much, but it is very beautiful.

a moving film by De Sica. Clift, who acts well again, occasionally displays unsympathetic

seeing sides almost selfishly driven by love. How deep that love runs is evident from a certain

scene, blinded by passion, oblivious to one's own physical danger. In addition, the emotions are

Jones constantly tossed back and forth between virtuous fidelity and an untemperable

passion. De Sica also pays quite a bit of attention to the many extras at the station, and

add a bit of humor. Albeit with a few, but not implausible, coincidences to the

to keep the story going. Because otherwise the lady would have left long ago.

Visually, I also found it to look well-groomed and beautiful, typical De Sica.
