American Elmo McElroy has a formula to create the greatest drug of all time. The drug gives a rush that is 51 times better than any other drug in history, and the ingredients he needs are available at any pharmacies. That formula is worth millions. Blowing his chances for quick cash in America up in the air, Elmo, clad in his kilt, tries to cash in on the $20 million formula in Liverpool where he has to deal with middleman and America hater, Felix DeSouza. But more and more criminals are getting wind of the golden possibilities that the drug offers...

Reasonable.
Strange when a Chinese goes to America to make a film about the English. The combination is therefore a bit strange at times, although in the end it is the American stamp that comes through the hardest.
The film is brightened up by tasty British drivel and cursing. Carlyle does it properly, together with Jackson he forms a nice duo. Also some funny side characters that make it all look a lot like a Ritchie clone. It is especially the action scenes that have a clearer American feel, with a hint of HK violence.
Also a striking club scene with a lot of sample potential (already knew a number of conversations/monologues from this film) and music that you would really expect in such a club. Rare.
This is a nice and simple action movie. It's not top-notch, but at times quite funny, not too long and some modest highlights.

Cool movie. The 51st State is a crazy adventure and fires one entertaining scene after another at the viewer. It is one big farce, and then it is important that the humor works and the actors can also handle it. With Jackson, Carlyle, Mortimer and Meat Loaf, that's no problem. Great action scenes, strong one-liners, sharp direction and fast editing, etc. The 51st State reminded me of a Guy Ritchie movie, and that's a big compliment to director Ronny Yu.

Ronny Yu does Guy Ritchie.
At least that's what I think, because I haven't seen any of his films so far. This one isn't very inviting either - but maybe that's not very fair either, because the over-hip and too flashy Ritchie style has been out of fashion for a while. So maybe his other work is much better.
On a positive note, I found that Samuel L. Jackson plays a slightly different role for once. He can do that, you would almost forget. Carlyle is very much attached to his usual type. And Meatloaf maybe too, but that can't be annoying. And yes, Emily Mortimer - with her tight black leather suit on, and it looks good on her. Also by far the most fun character to play, and really the only thing that saves the film from absolute oblivion.
