Solid and skillfully made romantic comedy. But absolutely nothing more. And you would expect that from the creator of "Mitt liv som hund" and "What's eating Gilbert Grape".

Without a doubt one of Hallström's lesser films, a not really balanced drama which could easily have passed for a typical women's film, were it not for the fact that it is precisely those women who come off badly in the characterization (incomprehensible that Roberts' adulterous, lame husband finally forgives). The film relies mainly on the impressive star cast at the time, in which La Roberts in particular shows why she was at her peak in terms of fame in the nineties. Quaid will never become my favorite with his exaggerated playing and he also has a poorly written, thankless role here, which more or less also counts for Duvall as the dominant, unsympathetic father. Too bad that the subplot about the horses (races) just doesn't want to get interesting. So little balance in a story that is nevertheless quite funny at times, but above all lacks the bit of extra venom that Hallström managed to add in earlier and later productions.

"If you want to know how a woman argues, watch this one" - my sister 2021

It may be due to my temperamental relatives, and my background in the horse world. But I find the characters in this film human and recognizable at many moments. It's full of cutting, sarcastic comebacks and a lot of passive aggressiveness... I think you have to see the fun in that, but then it's also really fun!
