Good film in which a paranoid taxi driver sees a conspiracy in everything. The course of this sometimes slightly comic thriller is not easy to predict, so that despite the considerable length, the whole remains entertaining. Mel Gibson portrays his character extremely entertaining and Patrick Stewart is also well cast as the bad guy.

Neither meat nor fish that lacks the right and especially catchy tone for such a story. Let Mel also be a total, and especially annoying, miscast and then after an hour and a half I still long for the end.

The idea is not so bad in itself. A paranoid taxi driver. But the character portrayed by Gibson is above all very busy and comes across as cold-hearted rather than me going along with the tension of the conspiracy theories. The tone in combination with the music is also a total failure. The bland music regularly makes me feel more like The Pink Panther than a thriller that wants to be taken seriously. Something that continues in peaks and valleys because it all gets a bit more mysterious but lacks power due to an abominably poorly chosen soundtrack by Carter Burwell that I have cited several times in recent weeks as striking and good

It all gets a little better with the appearance of the Men in Black so to speak and of course the presence of Stewart. Yet everything is turned around again by the funny Gibson and relationship with Roberts, who lacks any chemistry and seems rather a 'must have'. The wheelchair scene is reminiscent of Jacob's Ladder's hospital scene, the fridge and all the storage cans locked is a nice detail, the movie theater where Gibson takes flight in Donner's Ladyhawke and the MK ULTRA story is a nice side step. Yet it is far too late and far too little.

Conspiracy Theory strands in an attempt to be smoother and more fun than appropriate for such a story. Perhaps the film can therefore be called a typical 90s product and especially a failure with an actor who guaranteed success in that phase.

I've always had a soft spot for Mel Gibson, even though he often does the same half-crazy roles. But he does a lot with such eyes, which somehow seems believable to him.

The film itself takes a very long time to get going. It wasn't until the second half that there was some tension. That is too late.
