Since the viewer is largely aware of who has done what and why from the start, a certain tension disappears. Only the last part of the film takes on a thriller allure, but even then things are predictable.

Average drama, somewhat clichéd, in which the young Robert Wagner plays his role quite well.

A nice thriller directed by Gerd Oswald, who directed his 1st film with this.

I've never read the book, but I didn't like the movie. Multiple versions have been released. For example, 35 years later A Kiss before Dying (1991) was released. Other film adaptations and remakes appeared in Japan and India.

3.0 *

This is not the only movie made in the 1950s about a boy who comes up with a permanent solution for his (pregnant) girlfriend. A Place in the Sun is another one. The inspiration for such films lies in some of the most notorious crime cases in the American media. So it's not very far-fetched, although they do go far in this film by letting Robert Wagner get along with 2 sisters. Fortunately, a good motive is devised (the capital of their father) which gives it credibility. Anyway, I especially enjoyed the beautiful colors of the film, the typical 50s setting and the very present music by Lionel Newman (arranged by Sinatra adepts Bill May and Nelson Riddle). The entire atmosphere is certainly important in the first part of the film because as a viewer you quickly know more than the police. Towards the end it gets a bit more exciting. Beautiful.
