Sleep Tight, Briar Rose.

Perhaps not as good storytelling as many other Disney movies, the songs aren't really memorable and it just lacks that little bit more for that Disney Magic we're so spoiled for after movies like Snow White, Dumbo, Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp. Still, Sleeping Beauty is a joy to watch. What a work of art this is. The fantastic animations are already a feast for the eyes, but it is especially Eyvind Earle's work that steals the show here. Really beautiful artwork. The details put into the drawings. From the dirt on the walls, the curtains and carpets on the walls, to the straw on the roof of the cottage in the woods, and for me the most beautiful thing in the movie for me, the blanket Princess Aurora lies under after she falls asleep cases. Where the narrative may be a bit lacking, the animation more than makes up for it. Truly a stunningly beautiful looking film. And those details in the backgrounds are also reflected in the animations. For example, look at what the wings of the fairies look like.

In addition, there is of course the strong bad guy. Or in this case a bad woman. Maleficent is arguably the best and scariest yet. in and in. Just like an evil witch should be. Perhaps the greatest evil person in Disney history.

Too bad the magic was a bit lacking here. But it does look nice, is fun and the film is really a visual gem.

I never saw Disney's Sleeping Beauty as a child, but the story is of course very well known. There are countless versions in which the princess pricks herself on the needle of a spinning wheel and falls into a deep sleep. The fact that the film has nothing to offer is actually a big disappointment.

Besides the fact that Aurora has almost no screen time and in the time she gets, she also says very little, which makes her a deadly boring character. That eternal song that every princess seems to be able to quickly get on your nerves. Prince Philip is just as drab so they make a beautiful couple in their own right. The three fairies provide some comical variety, but are not fun enough to run the film for the most part. Maleficent is an iconic appearance, but she too cannot save the film.

The animation is beautiful as always, quite atmospheric, which gives the film a dark feeling. Years later, however, a similar setting is greatly enhanced in The Black Cauldron. Unfortunately, the music doesn't stick either, so this sleeping beauty doesn't have a single highlight.

Again very solid.

And very fairytale-like too, both in atmosphere and story. The animation is also of a high standard. But unlike a whole host of other Disney films, I have little to no connection with the characters - not now and not even more than 20 years ago. That is a small shortcoming in an otherwise decent film, which also shocked me that this is now +60 years old.
