In the Mexican town of Quantana, the unscrupulous bandit Anacleto (Dirk Bogarde) is the feared ruler. Even the old village priest has given up the fight against evil. His successor, the young, energetic Father Keogh (John Mills) refuses to accept that. When an accomplice of Anacleto confesses to him, Father Keogh seems to be on the right track. Anacleto, however, punishes mercilessly: a bullet puts an end to the life of his former comrade. He is exiled, but returns after a year. He seems to want to improve his life. However, that turns out to be only apparent. The battle only now ignites in full force, with the intrigue and the bullets whistling around your ears and love playing a dramatic role.
