Aaaarrrgghhh maty... A film where the pirates from your childhood are truly present. A brilliant performance by Robert Newton as the one-legged Long John Silver.

I recently read the book and saw this film as a child. Time for a reassessment, then. Our understanding of pirates came from Robert Louis Stevenson's book, and this film especially reinforced it. Without Robert Newton's version of Long John Silver, there wouldn't be a Jack Sparrow. He provided the "aarrr" we know from pirates. Maybe not from him, but the one leg and the parrot certainly complete the picture.

Treasure Island was Disney's first live-action feature film. It didn't feature many top-tier actors, who were likely still at other studios. Or perhaps Disney wasn't yet familiar with filmmaking (for this type of film). The actors were mainly theater artists or actors with primarily supporting roles. Fortunately, the story is solid, and the filmmakers stayed fairly faithful to it. And for its time, the cinematography is quite good. I do miss Hollywood's trademark skill of well-crafted sword fights, something they certainly had more and better experience with around that time. So, at times, it feels a bit clumsy and dated. But it's a wonderful story, and Disney manages to make it a family film. I still quite enjoyed it.

Years ago I saw a Japanese cartoon version of this story from Nippon, beautiful drawings and super exciting and dynamic in its animation and also emotionally very well constructed, and I cannot help but compare this Disney version with that series.

Unfortunately I have to conclude that this Disney version is inferior to that series on almost every level, not only is the running time far too short which results in this film feeling too rushed (we don't even see his mother at the beginning of the film), but the characters are also far from impressive, Silver is a complete miscast and the rest of the pirate cast is also quickly forgotten, there are hardly any memorable characters and because of the Disney method the tension is almost completely lacking.

Only Jim Hawkins does it well.
