Some prominent but corrupt men have stolen $100,000 from an army safe with which they want to buy land. Sabata is a lone gunfighter who tries to stop this.

Indeed a quite funny film, because here and there the film really relies on the humor that is mainly created by the dry appearance of Van Cleef and the fun performance of Pedro Sanchez (real name Ignazio Spalla) as the drink-loving sidekick Carrincha.
Unfortunately, there is little story and it is mainly a series of scenes to bring Van Cleef to his ultimate (monetary) goal. So a lot of shooting against bad guys and some foul play here and there from the bad guy Stengel.
I think Franco Ressel plays the character as the makers intended him, but to me he came across as a bit too cartoonish for a convincing bad guy.
The blue-eyed William Berger has a much more charismatic appearance in his role as the banjo-playing, playful villain.
The soundtrack is quite good and matches the playful nature of the film. It is a fun experience, but there is not even a hint of tension anywhere and most of the outcomes of the scenes are predictable.
James Bond in the Wild West, as I read above, I don't think is a wrong description.

Spaghetti western with a high body count and all the clichés, sometimes even leaning a little too much on the clichés. Anyway, despite the thin story, it remains entertaining and that's what counts. I whistled the tune, although not by Morricone, all evening long. Van Cleef is still wonderful to watch as the trigger-happy Sabata. He is just as gruff and mysterious as Eastwood. Between 3 and 3.5*

Tight spaghetti western where the thin line between bad and good is walked. Van Cleef's role is tailor-made for him. Berger as Banjo also plays a good role, he could easily have been the leading actor in My name is Nobody, with Terence Hill. The story is simple yet powerfully developed in the shooting scenes. Furthermore, thanks to the available booklet by Thomas Dew, it is clear how the elite thinks these days and it is nice to see how course/free run already existed 
in 1969 thanks to the good role of Nick Jordan. Linda Veras's mirror scene immediately raises the film to R rating for USA.
