Good film in which two men want to take revenge on the same men for different reasons. A typical spaghetti western with fine and atmospheric music by Ennio Morricone. It's clear where director Giulio Petroni got his inspiration from, but compared to Sergio Leone's Dollar trilogy, the scenes are less memorable here. A small 3.5 stars.

Today this one was on TV (AMC Channel)

Even though the DVD is in my closet, I still watched it this way.

My 3.5* rating is maintained.

This time I paid special attention to the music, and I must say it wasn't that easy.

It would have been nice if Morricone here would have provided work of the same quality as that for the Leone westerns.

Or better yet, the score he wrote for Fistful of Dollars would have written for this one.

Then the film and score would have been equal, because Death Rides a Horse is much better than that mediocre western.

Too bad they copied Clint Eastwood's outfit (including revolver holster) almost exactly for John Philip Law.

I don't understand at all the commentary regarding Law's voice that I have read here a number of times.

There's nothing wrong with that, quite the contrary.

Comedy is always lurking in the spaghetti westerns (there are very few exceptions to that rule)

The Mexicans are usually caricatures, laughing as if they have a screw loose.

Same here again, but it was still a bit limited.

But all in all, this film is in my opinion one of the toppers of the spaghetti western genre.

A film that relies heavily on the Leone trilogy but does not reach that level. So every now and then close-ups of faces and eyes - but poorly executed. So a young hero - but Law is no Eastwood. Law made a weak showing anyway with his thick John Wayne baritone voice and his too tight poker face. You keep wondering all the time what the movie would have been like with Eastwood. Van Cleef was as usual, and the story went well, just like the music of Morricone.

But oh well, it is entertaining, especially for the spaghetti western lover.
