Young Englishman James Burke dreams of a career as a sailor and quickly rises through the ranks of the shipping industry. When an accident forces him to stay ashore for a while, the blood creeps where it can't go and, after healing, he musters on the floating wreck, the SS Patna, with some 800 pilgrims on board. When the ship threatens to sink during a storm, the shady captain persuades him to save his own life and leave the passengers to their own devices. But the ship does not sink. The disgrace is great and Jim, branded a 'coward', disappears into anonymity.
