The opening animation and the music by Blake Edwards are the two strongest points. In addition to the clever Panther theme, there is also the song Meglio Stasera, sung by Fran Jeffries. Deriving a cartoon character from a gemstone was a genius idea.

It starts with a succession of short scenes in various world cities, including the Colosseum in the background. Then the characters gather in the northern Italian ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, to steal the pink diamond or just prevent the theft.

David Niven plays the gentleman burglar The Phantom, a character reminiscent of Fantômas (1913) and Arsène lupine. However, he is overshadowed by Peter Sellers, who used a lot of improvisation to give Clouseau his own character. He would develop this further in the sequels. He combines physical slapstick humor with puns. It's also a parody of Sherlock Holmes, who also wears a mackintosh and plays the violin - albeit slightly better in tone. There are good jokes in it, but it also has a cheap farce to it. Claudia Cardinale has the grace to play a princess, but it's a shame her voice is dubbed. You can tell from her lip movements that she does speak English. At her entrance she wears a pink ski suit, a color that is emphatically present in several scenes. Yves Saint-Laurent designed a few packages and received a name for them.

I kind of feel the same as JoeCabot. Bland with a lot of clumsy stumbling meant to make you laugh sick, but something Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin did much better a few decades ago so it just doesn't work. Then you have some long set pieces that were quite catchy, like the whole thing in Clouseau's room with his adulterous wife and of course the "theft" itself with the Phantom and his cousin in monkey suits . Sellers also not as memorable as is sometimes claimed. In the first hour he is even barely noticeable. The positive of the film is that this was the start of the much funnier cartoon series with the real pink panther.
