“Right song, but the wrong girl.”

Charming film with many big stars acting as if they are on vacation. The acting sometimes looks a bit wooden, but the fun radiates from it. When Sinatra and Crosby sing a song together, you suddenly forget their somewhat stiff acting. And this is Grace Kelly's last role, and she shines as brightly as ever. Not one of her best roles, but it remains a joy to watch her. High Society is a sort of remake of The Philadelphia Story and lacks that sharp and sarcastic tone of that film (and the rock-solid dialogue), but High Society is a pleasant and entertaining film nonetheless.

Apparently a remake of The Philadelphia Story, but since I haven't seen that one yet, here is just my impression of this High Society. A souped-up, fluffy story in which the Hollywood stars somewhat parody themselves. It was Grace Kelly's last film, after which she would move in even higher circles in real life as Princess of Monaco. Based on this final performance, it is not a great loss, I must say. Although it is not entirely her fault—the entire production exudes staleness, old boys hanging out together just trying to make a quick buck—but otherwise, I find little persuasiveness.

What I want to remember from this film. I thought Frank Sinatra wore a nice hat in the first part of the film (black hat with a white ribbon), enjoyed Cole Porter's talent, and the musical performances of Bing, Frank, and Louis. Only the musical part saves the film somewhat. Otherwise, it seemed like a comedy without humor. Absolutely not screwball level, although in terms of execution it is supposed to be a sort of sex comedy.

Visually and musically appealing film, which is already swinging a bit towards the sixties but still lingers a little too much in the tame fifties. The ending, in particular, was quite dull.

Some of those technicolor scenes with Grace Kelly look like they came straight out of Vogue magazine or something similar; very stylishly done.
