It's a satire on sensational journalism or yellow journalism, with reporters from competing newspapers trying to outdo each other and do anything for a scoop. An escaped prisoner is more important than the beginning of the war ("Take Hitler and stick him to the funny page!") The pace is fast, the speaking speed very high. Sometimes they tattle through each other or there are two simultaneous telephone conversations. This was technically difficult, as they could only record one microphone at a time.

It is a reworking of the play The Front Page by Ben Hecht, who himself worked as a reporter in Chicago. There is unity of time, place and action. Everything takes place within a limited, hectic workspace, introduced by a long tracking shot. It's a race against time. They have one day to prevent the execution of someone who shot a policeman without realizing what he was doing.

The biggest difference with the play is that they made Hildy a woman. She is in a love triangle and has to choose between a quiet family life and a hectic career. Burns tells her, "You're a newspaper man!" Rosalind Russell hired someone to give her character some extra witticisms. Director Howard Hawks encouraged initiative and improvisation. There are daring political jokes in it. Moments of self-reference come when the real actor names Ralph Bellamy and Archie Leach are mentioned. The new title is derived from Man Friday, Robinson Crusoe's helper.

Cary Grant often plays the well-dressed bachelor who is crazy and concocts plans, but ultimately has his heart in the right place. Of the many screwball comedies in which he has acted, this is perhaps his best.

Insane movie. The last half hour in particular is one of the most chaotic bits of cinema I've ever seen. An incessant word diarrhea in which all the separate storylines are talked together. If you lose focus for two seconds, you are hopelessly lost. I often had to rewind a few minutes because of this to get back into the rhythm. As befits a real screwball comedy, the film involves a man and a woman in an impossible relationship. They play 'hard to get' from start to finish and perform a continuous verbal ping pong that will make your head spin. These fast dialogues in combination with some bizarre B-plots are occasionally entertaining, but often they have the opposite effect. The caricatural portrayal of the shrewd news reporters quickly becomes annoying and you quickly get tired of the monotonous setting. Some jokes brought a smile, but compared to Bringing Up Baby, this farce is a lot less entertaining.

The ultimate example of the lesson that ultra-short shots are not necessarily necessary to get speed in a film: hyperactive dialogues, well-spoken characters and a tight plot are sufficient. The most striking scene without those elements is therefore all the harder: the four poker reporters with calluses on their souls who are suddenly forced into introspection after Hildy takes the over-excited Mollie out of the press room. Perfect morbid comedy, and is anyone actually missing the music?
