Meh. Not something I can really relate to. There's a cat that stands out, the German gets to act like a mad scientist for a bit (that could have been a bit more exuberant, D'Amato, it is Kinski after all!), the POV shots and some wild zooms do their job, but otherwise, there's not much to it. It starts with the time period, roughly 1909; it's not really my era.

And then you throw in a costume party and a game to go with it, and I'm out. The music is very present, occasionally cloyingly sweet, often quite striking, and sometimes completely pointless. It's pure melodrama when everyone loves the wrestling cat and vice versa, a pointless dub, and the story just keeps going. A mask like that doesn't give me the creeps either.

Greta dies in a carriage accident and loses her memory. Her husband and wife take her in and begin a relationship. Family doctor Klaus Kinski steals her locket and discovers that it contains the formula for resurrecting the dead, in Inca script.

Joe D'Amato, you already know you're going to get some nudity and blood, and he also crams a fair amount of Poe into his work. It's all very early twentieth-century chic, but there's the occasional generous dollop of blood and some guts and eyeballs, but don't expect too much from the film.

A bizarre, chaotic film where both the mysterious nature of the story and the flashbacks certainly don't make it any easier. But there's still plenty to enjoy. After the credits roll, you can begin to understand the story, though a few questions remain. Yet, the film's opening is the crux of the whole story. There's a dream sequence from Luciano Rossi, who plays the brother of the beautiful Ewa Aulin (Greta), but who himself is crazy about his sister and spies on her with her lover. In a tragic event, Greta dies, and his brother uses magical powers to bring her back from the dead. The memory of a resurrected murderess gradually returns, combined with some imaginative imagery. Ewa Aulin commands all the attention, but Angela Bo is also a beautiful presence. There's plenty of nudity and blood. Klaus Kinski has a minor role, and Luciano Rossi, who plays Ewa Aulin's brother, is convincing.

Strange film, but quite good. 6/10
