Famous bear.

You would prefer to wish a gentleman of class a film that more closely matches the class of the legendary 'comics' by Marten Toonder. Now the film is in the middle of a somewhat cheap-looking cartoon for small children and the comic books that were the logical consequence of the pretty pictures and their captions.

The audio in particular disappoints, which is only partly due to the mediocre voice cast. More love and attention would have done the film better. In any case, 'If you understand what I mean' met with resistance at the time from a lot of enthusiasts and fans of Tom Poes and the famous bear Bommel. So not entirely wrong.

Reasonable.

If You Understand Wat Ik Bedoel is the first Dutch full-length cartoon, made by the Toonder Studios in 1983. The film is largely based on the text comic strip De Zwelbast by Marten Toonder from 1957.

After a heavy thunderstorm, Lord Ollie B. Bommel finds a large egg, which has been left behind by a dragon at Bommelstein Castle. Out of the egg comes a little dragon that seems completely innocent and does no harm to anyone. Lord Bommel takes care of this dragon and calls him Zwelgje. However, Zwelgje turns out not to be just any dragon. It is a swelling bark that grows and turns into a ferocious dragon when angered. This naturally creates complications when the dragon is used by the villains Super and Hieper to carry out their evil plans.

For lovers of the stories of Tom Poes, the film is a feast of recognition. For example, servant Joost, Wammes Waggel, grocer Grootgrut, Bul Super, Marquis de Canteclaer, Dr Zielknijper, neighbor Doddeltje and professor Zbygniew Prlwytzkofsky are reviewed. The voices in the film are neatly arranged; each character gets the voice you would expect. The best Dutch voice actors have been hired for this, and the attentive viewer will recognize the voices of, among others, Paul Haenen, Sacco van der Made, Ger Smit, Paul van Gorcum and Trudy Libosan. Also nice is the cameo of (the voice of) Fred Emmer as a newsreader.

Unfortunately, the Toonder Studios did not have a large budget available, and that is reflected in a wooden animation. A comparison with films from the Disney studios from the same time is therefore quite flawed. However, the film was made with a lot of fun, and it shows. The 84 minutes look nice, although the film unfortunately did not quite survive the test of time. 3.5*

First-class youth sentiment that I couldn't lie, I was also curious if anything of that strong impression from the past was left.

The story of the touching dragon who sees a father figure in Bommel and the care that Bommel wants to take care of the animal is nice. However, it soon becomes apparent that Zwelgje has bad qualities. A nice battle between the caring Bommel, two crooks who naturally want to exploit the bad and the rest of the village who feel threatened.

Interesting is actually all facets of the characters that pass by and the translation of them. We see them at their best, nurturing and loving, we see fear of the unknown and something we don't understand, and we see exploitation, the lack of one's qualities. Then there's Zwelgje herself who might stand for development, or growing up with responsibilities, you don't have to be a real dragon to cause major problems. Maybe Zwelgje stands for finding your place...

Anyway, If You Understand What I Mean has entertained me after all these years and that I say that while I'm not into animation. Nice to see you again.
