Hunting Season plot
An overprotective father and his spirited 12-year-old daughter take in a mysterious young woman. She's washed up on the banks of a local river. A ruthless drug dealer and trafficker [Alejandro] assassinates Lizzie [Scarlet Rose Stallone] and leaves January [Shelley Henning] for dead. Bowdrie [Mel Gibson], a hunter and survivalist, finds her and patches her up along with his teenage daughter Tag [Sofia Hublitz]. Bowdrie realizes he can only ask his good friend (and sheriff) Brake [James DuMont] for help to get January to safety. It's only a matter of time before some shady characters show up. A standard story with well-developed characters and relationships. Bowdrie is no caricature, and (unusually) Tag behaves like a real teenager. The finale isn't entirely watertight, but that's a minor blemish on this entertaining action thriller.

A decent action thriller. The limited story is straightforward and offers no surprises. The execution is reasonably successful. The tension builds steadily towards a violent climax. The film is easy to watch and gradually builds to the conclusion without becoming tedious. Gibson is comfortable in his role, and young Hublitz complements him well. Visually, the film is also excellent. 3.5

A mediocre film about a man and his daughter treating a woman with a bullet wound. Not only is the story weak, but the characters are also very poorly developed. It's nice to see Mel Gibson, but he barely improves on that. It does have a pleasant pace and a nice setting. A bit too dull for 3.0 stars.
