After Prey, the Predator franchise thankfully got back on track. After the 2018 failure The Predator, there wasn't much hope for me. But thankfully, someone had a brain, and we got Prey. It took a few steps back and wasn't laughably over the top. And Badlands, in turn, essentially does something new, because we experience the film through the eyes of the Predator.

The film starts off promisingly, but soon takes a noticeable dip. And the flaws slowly start to pile up. For starters, Thia is incredibly annoying. Thankfully, she eventually settles down. A talking Predator adds something, but also distances herself from the mystery. Personally, I find the Predator far too human-like here and prefer the mysterious silent killer. But hey, you apparently need dialogue, and since the Predator is central to this film and he works with Thia, they opted for a lot of talking. But the biggest flaw is, unfortunately, typical Disney. They couldn't resist adding a cute ape-like creature. And these kinds of playful moments don't belong in a Predator film. And the big, fearsome monster has become a bit of an anticlimax. The film's content is actually exactly as the plot outline summarizes it. We don't get much more than that. The Predator lore is fleshed out a little more and that's it.

Predator Badlands is at its best when Dek lets loose, and since it's a Predator film, that's a given! I'm not sure if there's an after-credits scene, but the film certainly leaves plenty of room for a sequel.

Entertaining action movie, but not much more than that to be honest.

Another massive CGI fest. I still find it so awful. The action itself is decent, though. Elle Fanning is incredibly annoying, there's a feeble attempt at creating crowd-pleasers like Baby Groot and Baby Yoda, and the story is simply too predictable.

A decent, bite-sized Hollywood movie. Thankfully, the running time is manageable.

I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I thought it was a skillfully made and entertaining blockbuster, with Dan Trachtenberg clearly having a knack for cool, spectacular action scenes. On the other hand, I thought it was a bad "Predator movie." The franchise's DNA is actually quite lacking, and in many aspects, Trachtenberg does the opposite of what you'd normally expect from a Predator film. I found the "Disney-fication" particularly striking and a shame. It's clearly meant to be family-friendly, with that endearing, cute little creature as an "odd" exception. Well, odd for a Predator film, I mean. It wouldn't have been out of place in a Star Wars film. But with Predator, I do consider it a "problem," or at least a striking choice.

And of course, there's nothing wrong with trying something different in such a long-running franchise. I actually thought Prey from a few years ago was by far the second best film in the series—especially because it went so back to basics—but I guess you can't repeat that trick every time. But I do think it could have been more in keeping with the spirit of the series. This could have been any science fiction blockbuster, in principle—the hostile planet with all its flora and fauna often reminded me of Avatar, for example. And again: I enjoyed it. Everything looked good and at times impressive on the big screen. I certainly think Trachtenberg is a good genre director. But in terms of content and especially tone, he misses the mark here, in my opinion. Including a very strange cliffhanger-like ending; I hope this doesn't mean we'll get sequels. Just try something new next time; that'll at least keep the series interesting and alive.

2.5*.
