I agree with what ibendb says. I understand the AL label because the film passes the 'test' on the assessment criteria, but the film is subcutaneously layered where, say, -14 year olds would not sufficiently understand the context of the story. I therefore left my 12 year old daughter at home at the last minute.

A fine debut as a feature film by the young filmmaker Van Dijl. Less melancholic than, say, Close, Het smelt or Girl, although an uncomfortable atmosphere of transgressive behavior hangs throughout the film. It is also that thought that you take with you in advance when you enter the film, partly due to the suggestive film title and the synopsis.

Still, the film remains entertaining and oppressive. The approach is different from other films. Partly due to the exceptionally mature and strong performance of Tessa Van den Broeck, the film feels very authentic. Some will dismiss the film as boring and meaningless, I had a different feeling. Still, a lot of attention for tennis. A solid film to send to the Oscars, I would be surprised if it made the shortlist, without detracting from the film.

The story of a young tennis player who doesn't want to or doesn't dare to speak when her coach is compromised. Because it's not easy to say something. And she struggles with it herself. But it remains unclear for a long time what's going on in her head. Does she know anything? Is she closely involved? Did something really happen or not? She throws herself completely into her tennis. To continue or to go into a kind of denial phase? You see her struggle with her thoughts and the pressure it has on her, with whatever she may know or have experienced...

Julie Zwijgt is a little gem as a film, even though it doesn't seem to convince that quickly. It is mainly a story that deserves a place and for that reason alone it should become a bit more known. But on the other hand it still lingers longer than I had expected. Tessa Van den Broeck is first and foremost a good tennis player and a bit less of an actress, but she does a pretty good job. Certainly towards the end of the film that gets better.

Julie [Tessa van den Broeck] has a good chance of breaking through to the youth thanks to the guidance of tennis coach Jeremy [Laurent Caron]. After club member Aline [Tamara Tricot] commits suicide, Jeremy withdraws as trainer “in consultation with the club”. Everyone knows that Jeremy has done something unacceptable, but Julie keeps quiet. The vast majority of this psychological drama consists of images of Julie on the tennis court, interspersed with people who constantly ask her: “Ça va?”. The denouement is set from the start and it is a mystery why Van Dijl thought he needed more than 15 minutes to work towards it. Pierre Gervais is good as Jeremy’s patient replacement. Van den Broeck is better at playing tennis than acting.
