In 1307, Austrian King Albert [Ben Kingsley] rules Switzerland, which is unable to resist as long as the various population groups do not unite. But the cruelty of commander Gressler [Connor Swindells] and the heroic deeds of William Tell [Claes Bang] put Austrian rule under great pressure. An armed uprising is inevitable as long as Tell is alive. Good location work and some decent action scenes are insufficient compensation for the overcrowded screenplay and the often poor dialogues. Kingsley and Pryce have little to do in this messy film in which the famous scene with the apple and the crossbow naturally takes a prominent place.

William Tell is an overdone b-movie with occasionally bad Shakespearean play dialogues that seem very unbelievable. Especially because the cast doesn't do much. What also bothers me (and that's not all in the same film) is that everyone always has to call each other by the family band. Every first sentence in a dialogue starts with uncle, niece or son, for example. Very tiring. Let alone that everything is accompanied by a melodramatic score.

In addition, the subject is very niche. Now, I happen to have studied history. But everything seems so obvious in this film that I wonder if the makers realize what we are dealing with thematically. With this film, an explanatory text or voice-over at the start of the film would have been a smarter move.

Furthermore, the film looks visually fine and despite the above, I can get through the film quite well because the world looks convincing.

Too bad the film doesn't really have a clear target audience in mind or understand who might like it. This film quietly entered the cinema and will also quietly disappear again.

Just a great film. I can't agree with the low rating and the comments. I also found many of the cast members very entertaining, especially Claes Bang as William Tell.
