Elio plot
"They asked for our leader. They got... him."
Elio Solis, an underdog with a vivid imagination, struggles to adjust in life. Then one day he is beamed up by aliens to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives of the galaxy from far and wide. Erroneously assigned as Earth's galactic ambassador to the rest of the universe, Elio is completely unprepared for that kind of pressure. He must then forge new bonds with eccentric alien life forms, survive a series of formidable trials, and somehow discover who he is really meant to be.

The film starts off really cool with some fun focus (you don't see that much in animation) and beautiful images of space. Also the bit of history with the Voyager incorporated, that voice-over from the radio etc, that's all very well put together. Technically also very strong, beautiful how the sand is animated for example. But once the story starts the film quickly sinks away. Elio is simply an annoying child and that never really gets better. The story is mediocre with some funny moments but that whole colorful world (kitsch) and all those figures (colorful but colorless) are not convincing. The film is pleasantly short but still this thing felt quite long. Too bad after such a promising and good start. 2.5*.

Great movie. Nothing more, nothing less. Pixar has lost its shine a bit in recent years. Every now and then a great movie (Soul, Onward, Inside Out 2), but nowhere a real Toy Story, Finding Nemo, or Incredibles... The idea of an alien abduction sounds promising, and the characters in the movie were all nicely designed, but the story had little substance. In terms of humor, this movie was lacking. A stray smile here and there, but nothing more. Maybe more fun for the very youngest among us.
Missed opportunity, but fine for the streamer / Disney Plus.

Another Pixar with seemingly nothing wrong with it: it all looks beautifully colorful and polished, the characters are likable, and the story is quite enjoyable. But still... something's missing. It's Pixar on autopilot. It's as if they've run out of inspiration and can only make sequels or generic films like this. Entertaining enough, but it doesn't stick.
