The previous two films were light-hearted but also a bit dull. But because they were light-hearted, they were still worth watching. Even though the murder mystery was never exciting. Poirot does his research, asks questions and at the end he gives the conclusion with all kinds of facts that you as a viewer cannot actually know. A bit bland. In this film you only had that comment about it not being wild honeywhich could have made you think: this has something to do with it. But other than that you are not involved anywhere and how Poirot comes up with something from those hints often feels a bit unbelievable.

Anyway, this movie is just as dull as it is just plain boring. The cheerfulness of the previous films is gone. This is more horror. Often in one house, at night and therefore dark and nowhere really visually interesting. Just a nice cut from someone splashing in the water to a shot of a boat splashing in the water. Nicely done, but that's it. Also many attempts at jump scares to evoke that horror feeling, but they are rather over-made and poorly timed and do not work. And occasionally some strange camera positions that also feel too artificial.

What also stands out is the cast. Part 1 still had an absolute star cast, with the second part this became less and this third part has just a few more lesser-known actors and actresses. 1.5*.

Film adaptation of 'Halowee'en' Party', Agatha Christie's 1969 Poirot mystery, moves the action to Venice. Hercule Poiret [Kenneth Branagh] came here to enjoy his retirement, but every day people come to his home to ask him for help. Poirot is persuaded by writer Ariadne Oliver [Tina Fey], an old acquaintance, to go to a séance. She hopes that Poirot can help her unmask a medium [Michelle Yeoh]. The séance takes place in a house with a grim history and (obviously) has tragic consequences. And only Poirot can figure out what really happened. Branagh is more interested in style than in content and is repeatedly tempted by unusual camera angles and stylistic references to horror classics. As an actor he falls short: little is left of Poirot's beloved eccentricities. Fey is good as the crafty writer, but she would also have turned out better with a more sober direction. The best performance comes from Jude Hill as Leopold, the young son of the doctor [Jamie Dornan], who indicates that he can make contact with the dead himself.

The film has horror elements - mainly few successful scares due to a few hard blows - but that is just the context: it soon turns out to be an ordinary whodunnit detective (Halloween style), as is to be expected from an Agatha Christie-based film, which in the end is mainly contrived and complicated because everything and everyone aims to mislead Poirot and the viewer - nothing and no one is what it seems - where Poirot, like a devil from a box, suddenly unmasks everyone. The viewer is somewhat left behind because not only is there a lot that comes to light - it is a large puzzle that is being put together - but the form places succinctness above clarity. What is nice is that the hyper-rational Poirot does not allow himself to be fooled, even when the whole world conspires against him, but leaves the story open as to whether he has come to believe something about the supernatural as a result of the poisoning that caused him to hallucinate (and is responsible for many of the horror elements).
