Oh well, such a costume drama set in the eighteenth century looks nice: beautiful palaces, locations, costumes, to die for. But you don't get much story, or drama. A film by and with Maïwenn, not a great director and not a great actress by the looks of it. It is also never useful, a director who plays the leading role himself. Anyway, it's not really a bad film, just a bit flat, and without many surprises. Her special attraction to men is not very obvious. This film about a courtesan (an expensive whore) is also very prudish. And they weren't in the eighteenth century. Very hypocritical, as the film clearly shows. That's nice.

Jeanne du Barry [Maïwenn] escapes a poor life by sleeping with rich men. That eventually brings her to the most powerful man in France: Louis XV [Johnny Depp], who is happy to be in the company of someone who is averse to formality and hollow traditions. When Louis' wife dies, Louis' daughters turn against Jeanne and use Marie-Antoinette [Pauline Pollmann], the newly betrothed of the Dauphin [Diego Le Fur] (who will succeed Louis after his death) in an attempt to outwork Jeanne. Depp's big comeback shows bad taste and seems intended to give Amber Heard a slap in the face (yet). The film is in danger of being destroyed by the fact that both Depp and Maïwenn are unsuitable for their roles and the garish references to Barry Lyndon (including music by Handel). Fortunately, there is good supporting work, especially from Benjamin Lavernhe, who is simply sublime as Louis's confidante La Borde.

Maiwenn looking for recognition.

The story of Jeanne du Barry is perhaps a little too much the story of Maiwenn herself - the echoes about Jeanne's position at court are uncomfortably similar to how Maiwenn is portrayed as a kind of pariah by many in the French film world. This fits perfectly into her oevre, but it is also a bit of a shame that it comes back to that every time.

Because it is clear that she brings an enormous amount of talent and skill, and without too much apparent difficulty, she manages to bring such a mega production to a good result - where she clearly has a tight control over the direction, a notorious overactor as Depp keeps a tight leash and easily outclasses him in the scenes they play in together. Just imitate it before you criticize.

On the other hand, I would much rather have seen her in a contemporary production than in this kind of costume drama. However important it may be, and with all due respect and praise for the fact that the gambit has undoubtedly succeeded, I would have preferred to see her in a small film about something small - a film that relies on her talent, rather than just to provide proof of this. Nevertheless, Jeanne du Barry is definitely worth seeing in its own right - although you may have to like costume dramas.
